First test session a success ?
Saturday at Firebird Int Raceway was our first test session of the new year . The reason for the question mark in th title is we really won't know until we hit Pomona in two weeks if what we learned yesterday gets us close at the first race . I should probably explain how the class David runs works . It's called super comp and it's a little complicated . The object is to run as close to 8.90 seconds without going faster or in racing terms( BREAKING OUT) , Under the carburetor is what they call a throttle stop. It's a device that's adjustable and is used to slow the car down . In order to make sure these cars can run at least 8.90 at all different tracks under all different weather conditions everyone builds there car to run faster , then they use a throttle stop to get it slowed down to 8.90 whats known as the ( CLASS INDEX) .Pay attention there's going to be a test at the end .Now here is where it get complicated . Since the idea is to run 8.90 on the nose the way you get the advantage is by leaving the starting first or getting a ( HOLE SHOT ) . You see since the two lanes are timed separately if you hole shot you opponent you can cross the finish line first even if both cars run the same 8.90 ET or ( Elapsed Time )Today we ran 9.19 on the first run ( to slow ) . We went back to the pits ,took a little throttle stop out of it went back up and ran 9.08 ( still to slow ) . What's next ? Back to the pits to take out some stop then back up for run number three .It's been about 4 hours since we started , you have to remember there are about 150 other cars doing the same thing This time 8.85 ( to fast , my bad ) Back to the pits now we add a little stop . Time for one more run . 8.93 closest run of the day . Overall I give us a B . I would have liked to get a closer but not bad . Here's the bad news in Pomona we only get two runs to figure it out . Now even when we run 8.90 it has to be constantly adjusted because there are a lot of things that make the car faster or slower . Here are a few , out side temperature , hotter means slower colder means faster , Track elevation , higher slower , lower or (closer to sea level ) faster . Wind speed & direction head win slower , tail wind faster . Those are just some of the variables so I think it's amazing we can dial these cars to within thousands of a second . Well that's Drag racing 101 for today . Hopefully I didn't bore you guys . Let me know what you think . If I get some good feedback I'll share some more of my 40 years at the drag strip .

Where the heck did the offseason go.
- As we prepare for the upcoming race season I had an idea. At work a lot of our customers and friends ask about the race car and how things are going at the races so I decided to start a blog about our race team and the 2012 season. Lets start by telling you what we race. I race in a class called Top Sportsman . It is NHRA's fastest sportsman door slammer class. ( Door Slammer means race car with doors) . I also work on or crew chief on two other cars . One is Bryan Laflam's corvette also a top sportsman car and the car above which is David Londagin's super dragster. As of now my car is in the chassis shop having some safety updates and we should have it back this week so we can finish getting it ready for our first race . Today is the first test day for one of our cars Dave's dragster . Check back for updates . Thanks Kenny Speed
